Harry A. Bell Travel Grant
Want to apply for a Harry A. Bell Grant?
Background This grant program, established as a memorial tribute in 1999 by Julia Child, CCP and Eva Haller, provides funds for travel and research to food writers during the pre-contract phase of their book proposal. Harry A. Bell, who encouraged and appreciated serious culinary pursuits, was an entrepreneur, a CPA and a mentor to many in the culinary profession. This grant opportunity extends his legacy of outreach.
Terms of Eligibility: The grant program assists writers by providing support for travel and research expenses during the time in which a proposal is being written and before a publishing contract has been awarded. Proposals should demonstrate significant contributions to the knowledge about food.
Terms of Grant: The grant award will vary according to the applicant’s proposal and expense budget. The average grants range from $3,000 to $4,000 but may vary according to the proposal. A committee of culinary professionals will evaluate each application. Grant recipients and non-recipients are notified annually in September. Recipients must submit a project report from their research travels with a detailed expense report to The Culinary Trust within one-year of receiving their grant award. Recipients must also submit two copies of their book to The Culinary Trust when published.
All recipients of a Harry A. Bell Grant, while not a contractual requirement as the writing and publishing industries are unpredictable, should make every effort to return funds to help perpetuate the longevity of the Harry A. Bell Grant program. The Culinary Trust realizes the value of the Harry A. Bell Grant program to the success of food writers during the pre-contract stage of a book proposal and requests that any recipient help to aid the Trust in keeping this program viable.
